Beavers Supermarket is the last locally owned and operated grocery store in Fort Collins. The original market opened in Fairmont, Nebraska in 1946. Our local store has been in business at the corner of Shields and Mountain Streets since 1979. It has survived in this corporate world by joining a member-owned distribution co-operative, which keeps prices competitive. And it still has the best meat counter in town.
When I was young, my friends and I would walk to Beavers to buy grocery necessities for our moms...and use our dimes for candy and superballs from the vending machines. I no longer live in that part of town and miss having a local corner market within walking distance. A gas/convenience store just isn't the same.

I've never been to Fort Collins, but I lived outside of Durango for 10 years. I now live in TX. I sure do miss Colorado summers. What I don't miss is having to drive 50 miles round trip to get groceries. I totally love convenience and mom and pop shops.

As for Beaver's, I drive by it often and think about stopping in to check it out, but I still haven't followed through. Soon...
